This page is to give you a little background about me, Dave Evans. The other pages in the site I'll share some stories about Savannah Fire Department, some will be about me, others about the firefighters I have served with, and still others about the fires, equipment and history of Savannah Fire Department.
I retired from the City of Savannah Fire Department (or Fire and Emergency Services, if you prefer)in February 2008. For several months prior to my retirement, I was on "vacation" with a company providing contract fire prevention and suppression service in Iraq. The company is one which many firefighters from throughout the US will be familiar - Wackenhut Services or WSLLC.
I'm now running my own internet business. It's amazing how far reaching we can be with the internet. I have conferences with people from Augusta to Australia in attendance. They be next door or on the other side of the world.
After 29 years of service with the Savannah Fire Department, I decided it was time for a change, so when Wackenhut offered a working environment with sun, sand and palm trees, I decide to give it a try. What I apparently didn't hear (Chiefs and husbands are infamous for their "selective hearing" abilities) was the small mention of terrorists.
(Or was that a mention of small terrorists? I don't know, between selective hearing and CRS I get confused.)
Anyway, like I was saying, I served with the City of Savannah Fire Department for 29 years and in Iraq for 18 months.
This website was actually started several times; but when the City Fire Department decided to put up their own website, a memo came out restricting the use of images of Savannah Firefighters without the permission of the Department. Being a dutiful employee, and close to retirement, I decided it was best to take the SavannahFirefighter.com down - at least until after I retired.
Savannah and her Fire Department have a rich history and it deserves to be available to all of our past firefighters and for those interested in the history of the fire service. After all, the history of the fire service is a collection of the individual histories of the cities, towns and communities from across the United States. Even with national and international organizations, the history, just like the emergency responses, begins at the local level.
My goal with SavannahFirefighter.com is to tell the story of Savannah Fire Department, now Savannah Fire and Emergency Service, and the fire departments of the communities surrounding Savannah. I have found through my travels that firefighters are more similar than different; no matter the community, country, career or volunteer.Like many firefighters, I grew up in the community where I choose to become a firefighter. Savannah has grown over the years and so has the Savannah Fire Department. Grown not only in size, but matured, I think.
I sincerely hope you enjoy the site.
Stay Safe and enjoy your time in the fire service.
